Open only a little more than a week, the Red Bluff hot dog cart Danny Dogs is becoming the place to go for a quick lunch.
“This is cool for somebody on the go like me,” said Don Roach of Red Bluff, owner of Roach’s Plumbing. “You can’t beat it.”
Owner Danny Tannehill said many customers have come back and told him the one hot dog was like having a whole meal and definitely worth the price.
“The hot dogs are good, but the Polish dogs are way better,” said Tehama District Fair CEO Mark Eidman, who said he has already visited the stand a few times.
“Thumbs up from me,” said Shannon Hunt of Red Bluff who came back to compliment Tannehill on his cooking.
Many of them have become repeat customers.
“People say $4 for a hot dog is pricey, but once they try it they keep coming back,” Tannehill said.
Tannehill runs the business Monday through Friday with his wife Dotty coming to help out for lunch.
“Sometimes it gets nuts at lunch, but I love this job,” Tannehill said.
“You get to meet all kinds of people and everyone’s been really nice so far.”
In addition to hot dogs, Tannehill sells sodas, water and a bag of chips.
A former tree surgeon for 25 years in the Bay Area before coming to Red Bluff seven years ago, Tannehill said he loves the area.
Tannehill started his business, which has been at several local events, including the Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale, because he couldn’t find work.
“I’d been out of work for a year and a half,” Tannehill said. “The unemployment was running out and I said I’m going to create a job so I created this job for myself.”
The cart is just outside the Post Office on Walnut Street and is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tannehill caters for parties and special events and can be reached at 530-529-3848.

$4 for a Nathan frank (I ate there ONCE and never went back) is a very pricey, indeed! The whole thing costs much less than $1 to produce and he marks it up more than 300%? This poorly-written article from the local news distorts reality somewhat. Most people I have spoken to in Red Bluff feel the prices are greedy and won’t eat there, opting instead for another stand called The Dogfather, across town, which has less expensive and better dogs!

Hey John,
I’m a staunch supporter of the free market system.
Unlike our federal government, California hasn’t passed any laws yet that force individuals to purchase a specific product on the private market.
If Danny can get $4 for a dog by delivering a better product and an awesome customer experience, then more power to him. The consumer is free to decide.
If the market won’t bear that price point that’s fine too. He’ll adjust his prices and still do well. I personally think he’ll do great at $4 dollars.
Dig this – the Wall Street Journal recently named Speed’s Hot Dogs in Boston “the best in the country”. The price? Seven bucks, and he sells out every day.
A true professional doesn’t compete on price. Ever heard of Gucci, BMW, Chanel, Rolex, Mercedes, Loius Vuitton, Lamborghini, Armani, Tag Heuer, Versace, Lexus, Prada, and Bentley?
Rain Man was right. Kmart sucks.
I have a big hairy problem with people who think they have the right to dictate how much money others should be allowed to earn. That kind of thinking stems from nothing more than a bad case of envy, and it ultimately hurts the economy.
Keep kickin’ ass Danny. You’re my hero.
And John – eat wherever you want to. It’s still a free country.

DON’T TREAD ON ME JOHN
Regulations and Price Freezing are the reason the Economy is like it is…Don’t worry we will keep paying in to Unemployment and Welfare so that the freeloaders can complain about the price of a Hot Dog

Danny, congratulations on your first week in the hot dog biz! Just make the best product you can give and the customer’s will come back for more. It’s not always the price that dictates the sales but the great customer service that you give. People tend to stick to brand loyalty and that is what will hep “Danny’s Dogs” become what you want and more.

GOD BLESS AMERICA –
Lets help fix our economy one Hot Dog at a time.
If you can sell your Hot Dogs for $100.00 each and have return customers then by all means sell them.
I offer a meal for $5.00 (HD, chips and a drink), with regular customers.
Danny we wish you the best of everything.

Congratulations Danny. Smart move with locating the cart near Post Office.I never considered such a spot myself.
I think a group of loyal regulars at yr cart everyday proves you are doing a fantastic job.
Well, If customers accept 4$ that means a price is fair.If you serve top end product you should not sell it cheap.
I think most customers enjoy whole hot dog cart experience. And that is why they are willing to pay more than at a gas station.I have myself started selling HDs for higher price.Although my volume suffered a bit, sales have increased.Buttom line, I pocket more money everyday without working longer hours.

Way to go Danny! I think it is great that you can get $4 per dog! What do you care about the other side of town anyway. I just started myself, yesterday. I get $3 for a plain jane dog and up charge for condiments and a larger size dog. It is working so far. large event coming up in Seligman. Fun Run end of the month. 800 cars registered, gonna be great!!
Don’t regret yourself, you are doing great!!!
Best of luck!!

OK I’ll weigh in with my 2 cents worth….I doubt you can buy a Big Mac in California for much less than 4 bucks. So if the choice is between an elderly cardboard tasting assembly line burger wannabe OR a nice fresh Polish with burnt onions & spicy mustard….you decide. Steve, as usual you are a wellspring of eloquence and insight. Stay at it, brother.
PS one week & counting till GoodDog re-enters the Dogosphere! Whoohoo!
peace, love…GoodDog!

I agree. If the rubes will pay it, take their money!
I’d never fork out $4 for a plain old hot dog in this area, but that’s just me. And, no, I’m not envious … just frugal in these tough times. Sorry.
But more power to ya if you can get the price of four $1 burgers at any fast food joint, or almost as much as any footlong Subway, you go for it, man!

A $4 hot dog? Dang right. If you serve something above the standard, you’re justified in selling it at a premium. I got pounded on a food forum for catering a Chicago and New York style hot dog affair for $9 per person. If you can find ANYONE else in the DFW area that caters REAL Vienna Beef Chicago style hot dogs AND Sabrett natural casing dogs with REAL Sabrett red onion sauce let me know.
When you own the only gas station in town you can dictate the price of gas.
Why is a hot dog looked down on by other foodies? Who knows. We all have our favorites.
Danny, I hope you sell a ton of ‘em!

Brother, I love it! Im from Red Bluff originally and it warms my heart to see your success! I also have a Hot dog cart here in middle TN, My dogs range from $4-$6 and the combos go up by two dollars. As long as you offer a quality product and great service charge what you want. John what do you charge your employer for an hours “work”. when you spend the time money and effort I know Danny has, then you can complain. Hey start your own Hot Dog cart and charge much less if you want. I think the rest of us would rather Justify our prices with Quality and service.

I brought your hot dog cart build video about a year ago. I cant tell you how many times I have watched it to keep the dream alive. Through the past 12 months I have been buying parts little by little to fabricate my cart. I am a mechanic by trade and have fabrication and welding skills. I want to take the time to thank you for putting together such a great video. Im going to use it to fab a metal hot dog cart using steel tubing and stainless steel. I look foward to having my cart ready and legal by the end of july for sure.
For those who think success will come easy, be prepared to fail. Because without failure there is no success.
Steve you are doing a great work.
